The following photos were taken at a public fishing grounds in northeast Ohio on May 27, 2007 from 2:30pm-3:30pm. It was in the upper 70s, overcast and breezy. There is a very large population of garter snakes here, despite the many fisherman. I found 12 snakes in one hour (9 Garters and 3 Water Snakes). Redbelly Snakes and Dekay's Snakes have also been found in previous years.

Eastern Garter
First Garter
This female Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) is the first one I found this year. Garters in this area tend to have a reduced or absent dorsal stripe and are usually less than two feet long.
Juvenile Garter
Young garter
I at first thought that this small garter was a DeKay's Snake.
Juvenile Garter Another Small Serpent
All the snakes I managed to catch looked like they'd been eating well.
Lake Toad Mr. Hoppy
I found this dark American Toad (Bufo americanus) too.
Water Snake Shoreline Serpent
I saw three Northern Water Snakes (Nerodia sipedon). All were about the same size and coloration. This male made no attempt to bite or musk me.
